The TCP port check

PingTool allows you to spontaneously check whether network devices are accessible on specific TCP ports. Servers provide TCP ports through which clients can access the services offered.

To test the TCP ports of a remote or local server, enter the desired port in the object properties. The result is displayed visually, similar to a classic ping: green including response time if successful, red if unavailable.

Alternatively, you can use the integrated command line tool PortCheck. To start it, right-click on an object and select the option “PortCheck on object(s)”.

Background

Every server, every client, and every network device - whether Windows or Linux - responds to specific TCP ports. A file server, for example, responds to ports 139 and 445, an SQL server to port 1433, and a terminal server to port 3389. If the servers do not respond to these ports, there is a malfunction. This information is extremely helpful for ServiceDesk employees and administrators.
