Initial Rollout - KB2301291

Jan-29-2023

This article describes the procedure for the initial PC-Check rollout. The aim is to provide a uniform PC-Check configuration for all client PCs (PCs, notebooks, VDs). In addition, further checks are to be made available for specific computers.

Refers to: PC-Check 4

Installation of the PC-Check Server (shares)

First install the PC-Check server. The PC-Check server consists only of the network shares ConfigShare$, ResultShare$ and Speedtest$. No services run on the "server", it does not provide TCP ports and no software is installed.

To do this, start the Setup.exe file from the download and select "Network installation". Perform step 1 (Create the central shares).  If the intended PC-Check server is a Windows server, you can perform the creation of the shares automatically. To do this, start Setup.exe on the intended server and simply click on the 3 buttons "Create share now" in step 1. Make sure that the shares work by clicking on "Test shares".

If the intended PC-Check server is not a Windows server, but a NAS / filer or other network storage, you must create the shares manually. To do this, select "Create shares manually". Then make sure that the shares work by clicking "Test shares" from a client.

You should also have two to three of your workstations equipped with the PC-Check client (MSI package) to be familiar with the basic configuration.

Customizing the configuration

On a client PC, first perform step 2 (Install the client software) and then step 3 (Install the administrator software). In step 3, specify the path for the shares you just created.

You should now see the "default" configuration in the PC-Check Designer. Adjust the configuration to the needs in your company and test it from your client PC.

Optional: Customize the speedtest target

You may not want to use the server where the ConfigShare$ and ResultShare$ shares are located as the speedtest target. To do this, simply create the Speedtest$ share on the desired server as described above and take this into account when rolling out the MSI package. The speedtest share does not necessarily have to be named Speedtest$. You can also use an existing share and specify a subdirectory, for example, \\Fileserver1\Open\Speedtest.

Distributing the client software

Distribute the PC-Check client software (MSI package) to all desired computers. Do this according to your standard rollout procedure. Usually, the distribution is staggered, from a few selected computers to all.

Hardening of the system (security)

If everything is working properly, you should still perform a few small hardening steps (permissions). To do this, perform the procedures described in the PC-Check manual in the chapter "Security - hardening the system".
